Wolves in Sheep Clothing
The issue of child sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests has been a significant and troubling issue within the Catholic Church. While some priests have faced criminal charges and jail time for their actions, the response to these cases has varied widely across different regions and over time.
In some cases, the Church has taken internal disciplinary actions against priests accused of abuse, such as removing them from ministry or defrocking them. Some priests have also been criminally prosecuted and sentenced to jail time for their crimes. However, there have also been instances where the Church’s response has been criticized for not adequately addressing the problem or for covering up abuse.
Overall, the handling of cases involving pedophile priests in the Catholic Church has been a complex and ongoing issue, with efforts being made to improve accountability, transparency, and support for victims. It is important to note that the response to these cases can vary depending on the specific circumstances and the jurisdiction in which they occur.
“The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ 2024 report (covering July 2023–June 2024) shows a significant decline in reported allegations — 902 allegations from 855 survivors across 195 dioceses, down 406 from the previous year.
• Of 97 categorized alleged perpetrators, 84% are deceased or already removed, 11% permanently removed, 4% temporarily suspended, and only 1% remained active in ministry during the audit period.
• Training and background checks remain high: more than 2.2 million adults and 2.8 million youth trained; over 2.2 million checks completed.
• Concerns remain about “complacency,” especially as some dioceses lack functioning review boards or face declining participation in safe-environment training.
• Former Jesuit leader Pedro Arrupe is under sharp criticism for the ordination and ongoing abuse cover-up of Donald Barkley Dickerson. Court filings now question Arrupe’s record as a candidate for sainthood. (The Guardian)
• In Peru and Chicago, Pope Leo XIV (formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost) is facing renewed scrutiny. Survivors and advocacy groups like SNAP accuse him of mishandling abuse complaints during his tenure as bishop — though Vatican statements dispute these interpretations. SNAP is calling for bold reforms, including global survivor representation and reparations mandates. (AP News)
While allegations against clergy in the U.S. have declined in recent years, long-standing cases continue to surface—especially in Chicago and San Francisco. Survivor advocacy groups are demanding stronger global accountability, particularly from Pope Leo XIV’s leadership. Major legal settlements are still in progress, pointing to ongoing institutional pressure. Critics also warn of complacency as a real risk to progress. (The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ 2024)
Membership Decline
United States
• The number of self-identified Catholics has dropped from about 25% of U.S. adults (early 2000s) to 19% in 2024.
• Weekly Mass attendance has plummeted, especially among younger generations. Pre-scandal, about 40% of Catholics attended weekly; today, it’s closer to 17– 20%.
• Major dioceses like Boston, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles saw thousands leave after abuse revelations.
Europe
• Ireland was deeply affected: Mass attendance dropped from over 80% in the 1980s to less than 30% today.
• In Germany, more than 500,000 people officially left the Catholic Church in 2023 alone, many citing abuse scandals as the final straw.
Latin America
• Although traditionally Catholic, countries like Brazil and Chile have seen surges in Protestant conversions and rising secularism, especially after prominent abuse cases and cover-ups.
• Chile closed over half of its seminaries and experienced a crisis in clergy vocations.
Trust in the Church Severely Damaged
• A 2023 Pew survey found fewer than 25% of U.S. Catholics trusted Church leadership to handle abuse properly.
• Victims’ groups and watchdogs (like SNAP or BishopAccountability.org) have consistently cited systemic cover-ups, fueling public outrage.
Therefore, whie the Roman Catholic Church has done a lot, they still have work to do and no one should rest until it’s completed. These priests have destroyed so many lives! Personally, I would like to see any priest proven guilty of sexual assault defrocked and jailed. And, I pray Donald Barkley Dickerson never makes it to sainthood–what a mockery of Holy Scripture! Matthew 18:6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”
Some may say “oh, he repented!” Repentance is a gift given freely to us through the infinite atonement of the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And while it is possible to be forgiven of such an egregious sin–it’s not the stuff saints are made of.
