About the Book and Writing Process
I started writing about my feelings when someone close passed away. I had written a lot of notes about therapy sessions and different important aspects of my life. My therapist said one day to me, “Phyllis, you could write a book with all the material you have documented.” So, I did.
Yes, it was difficult to revisit my past; along with painful memories (PTSD). Vic and I discussed all my memories and we put forth the work I needed. It took a while for us to cover and sort out all I was remembering. Sometimes, an incident would come a piece at a time. It was grueling work and I cried a lot.
It took me twenty years to write my book! Don’t misunderstand, I wasn’t writing for twenty years but rather taking very long breaks from it because it was painful. Plus, I didn’t recall the abuse until I was 41.
Yes, I did use journals and therapy notes. I had file folders spread all over my office.
Yes, I had started therapy over a very deep depression and was already in therapy when I recalled the abuse. My therapist knew from the things I’d say, and my diagnosis’s that I had been abused.
About the Story and Message
Everyone! It was written hoping I could help others who had been abused and give them support. It would be helpful to therapists and others in the field, as well as the public.
My near death experience will always stand out to me.
